PSU Vikings Football

The Context:

The Portland State athletic department wanted to increase student body attendance at Vikings home games at Hillsboro Stadium. There is currently a lack of communication from the department to the student body about upcoming sporting events, with low attendance being the result. Additionally, the perception at PSU is that we are a non-traditional, urban, commuter school with a lower emphasis on student life and events

The Insight:

Show that a Vikings football game is a way to build community with your fellow PSU students.

The Challenge:

PSU students spend the majority of their time in classrooms and rarely socialize with each other outside of the classroom. They don’t get information about PSU games from faculty. Students who do know when games are, don't attend because they feel like they don’t have anyone to go with. We need to bridge the gap of students feeling disconnected by getting students engaged with a themed event where they can get a taste of the community at PSU. By going to games, students will get a glimpse into what PSU culture can look like.
